A well-known developer named Gaet, shortly after the release of the Galaxy Note 7, ported its firmware to other, older flagships. Samsung. Since he owns the Galaxy S5, Galaxy Note 4 and Galaxy Note 5, all three devices received most of the functionality and capabilities of the newly minted phablet. Also on the list of supported devices is the Galaxy S6 Edge+, but it requires a special kernel.

At the end of my review of the firmware, which, by the way, received the name Nemesis, links to download it will be published, but before that you should find out about important nuances ported software.

I will tell and even show how Nemesis works using the example of a two-year-old Samsung Galaxy Note 4 phablet. It is worth noting that it has the same bugs as the Galaxy S5 due to the fact that they both have 32-bit processors. The difficulty is that the Galaxy Note 7 is equipped with a 64-bit processor, so porting some functions is impossible.

Anyway, Nemesis is based on one of the latest versions Software with important fixes, including the latest version of the September security patch. If you haven't already guessed, it's Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow and comes pre-rooted, which is no surprise. The developer cleaned the firmware from unnecessary garbage without loss of functionality.

There is a custom Suemax Hard Core, the latest version at the moment. It will allow you to overclock all 8 cores to the maximum clock frequency, however, we do not recommend doing this under any circumstances. The Synapse utility is provided to work with the kernel, but it requires additional knowledge in this area and in English. By the way, if the next day after the firmware you notice that the interface and scrolling in applications have not stopped slowing down, then I recommend resetting Synapse parameters (this is done through the Dev Tools tab in the utility itself).

Nemesis firmware is really good, and in many ways is not inferior to stock. Let's immediately look at the shortcomings so that you don't waste time if they turn out to be critical for you.
  • It is not yet possible to unlock the screen with a fingerprint
  • Always On Display and Night Clock do not work
  • The Note 7 camera is not fully functional (therefore, during installation there is an option to install a stock camera)
  • Edge panels are functional, but you must immediately disable Edge Channels and Edge Lighting to prevent the screen from freezing
It is worth noting that the Samsung Galaxy Note 5 has no problems with the fingerprint scanner and Edge panels.

There were many more positive aspects here, and I will immediately start with the most interesting and important ones. Firstly, from a user interface point of view, your smartphone will have almost all the functionality and elements Galaxy control Note 7. Secondly, the pen has features such as “Create a note”, “Smart selection”, “Screenshot”, “Translate” and “Minimize application”. The latter allows you to collapse any open application, and then expand at the desired moment by hovering your pen pointer over the icon in the lower right corner. Thirdly, almost all applications from the Galaxy Note 7 are present here, which will convey the entire experience of using the phablet.

There is support for the Russian language here, since this is a port official firmware international version of Note 7, so no need to worry about that. Fans mobile games You'll be happy to know that the Nemesis comes pre-installed with dedicated gaming tools, Game Tools and Game Launcher, which debuted with the Galaxy S7. They will provide you with the ability to record gameplay, turn off notifications, minimize the game, block the back and home buttons, and more.

Samsung Notes and S Note are installed by default in the firmware. Both programs offer amazing functionality for various notes and sketchbooks. There is also the standard Samsung browser, S Health, file manager“My files” and, naturally, the company store Galaxy apps Apps.

The developer has provided full theme support. As with the Galaxy Note 7, you can separately select the skin, icon design on the screen and wallpaper, including animated ones. Everything works fine, the themes are applied without problems, without requiring a reboot. It is worth noting that I installed the Flat TouchWiz theme from MINU on my Note 4 phablet and did not notice any bugs during the entire period of use.

The new launcher looks even more interesting than on the Galaxy S7. In addition to the new animation, it is possible to call up the menu by long pressing the application icon. This menu contains options such as “Sleep”, “Uninstall” and “Application details”. I must say this is convenient, but I wish there were more of these options. As for the animations, they are a little laggy, but Gaet is expected to fix this in future updates. Yes, work is underway to improve the firmware.

The dialer is very fast and easy to use. It has a call recording feature by default, and you can even turn it on automatic recording when connecting. This is done quite simply in the application settings. As I already said, the disadvantage of the firmware is the “Camera” application. While it does not know how to take pictures on front camera, however, it writes video without problems. For example, you can always take a selfie through Instagram. The developer, one way or another, is looking for a solution and, perhaps, in the near future there will be fewer shortcomings.

Overall performance is no worse than the stock firmware from the manufacturer. Some users claim that Nemesis has better compatibility with games. Most likely, the problem is in the kernel, but I can’t say with certainty. Some people also have problems with Bluetooth, although not with all gadgets. If you're worried you won't be able to turn off fast charging, then know that this can be done without problems in the “Battery” menu.

The developer has completely ported the keyboard from the Galaxy Note 7, which is good news. It seemed very fast, but the fact that additional characters are only available on the English layout is disappointing. The fault for this lies entirely with Samsung, because it did not provide software support for other languages.

You will be interested to know that in the display settings there is an option to change the screen resolution. Yes, it's actually the screen resolution, not the pixel density. But you should know that the most best option it's 1920x1080 pixels, not 1280x720, because not all apps render correctly. I also do not recommend changing the resolution if you chose a stock camera and not one from the Galaxy Note 7. The Camera apps from the Galaxy S5, Galaxy Note 4 or Galaxy Note 5 do not support this feature. In general, you can see for yourself, since the changes take effect instantly, that is, you do not need to restart your smartphone.

As for multi-window mode, you can use any two applications at the same time by splitting the screen in half. In the official firmware from Galaxy Note 7 multi-window mode limited set available installed programs, but the developer Nemesis made sure that everyone without exception was included in the list.

Do you use Google Now? Maybe it even seems convenient to you Google function On Tap? By default, after a long press on the “Home” button in Nemesis, nothing happens. You need to manually select a program to run using this shortcut.

How to start Google app by long pressing the “Home” button:

At the time of writing this review, the author has released a firmware update for the Samsung Galaxy Note 4, which fixes a number of important problems. That is, we first install the firmware, then immediately, without leaving recovery, flash the OTA Center and install the update. The links, of course, will be at the end of the article, where you won’t miss them.

Note:
Neither I nor anyone else is responsible for the possible loss of functionality of a smartphone or memory card. Always make a backup of your data in the device’s memory so as not to lose it in case of failure.

You should also know that installing custom firmware often leads to voiding the phone's warranty.

To do this, go to “Settings”, select “Security” and uncheck the “Re-activation blocking” option. If the data on the device is encrypted, then you need to completely decrypt it, otherwise after flashing the firmware you will not be able to restore access to it.

1. Flash Samsung Galaxy Note 5 official single-file firmware via Odin

Before flashing the firmware, be sure to fully charge your smartphone, check that the cable through which you will be flashing your Galaxy Note 5 is not damaged, Kies and its services are closed on your PC.

Be sure to read these instructions first Samsung firmware Galaxy Note 5 SM-N920 to the end, and only then start flashing the firmware for your “animal”.

And so the first thing you need to do is download and install on your PC the drivers for connecting the phone to the PC - Drivers, then download the programmer itself - Odin3 v1.85

Call the task manager and stop all processes with the word “Kies”. We run the Odin 3 1.85 program as an administrator and see the following window:

Press the PDA (or “AP”) button and select the TAR file from the folder where we placed the downloaded firmware, and check all the boxes as shown in the screenshot below. In addition to the firmware, the archive may contain the file SS_DL.dll - we don’t count it - it’s a remnant of KIES (garbage).

Enter the Samsung Galaxy Note 5 SM-N920 smartphone into download mode

To do this, you need to turn off your smartphone and then, with the phone turned off, simultaneously press the Volume Down + On button. + Home, then confirm the desire to flash by pressing the Volume Up button, a green robot should appear with the inscription “Downloading...” and connect the smartphone to the PC using the included USB cable. That's all, you have updated your Samsung Galaxy Note 5 SM-N920 to the new official firmware.

Obtaining Root rights to Samsung Galaxy Note 5

This method of obtaining root rights superuser Note 5 was tested on Android firmware 5.1.1, but in principle it should work on Android 6.
on the website of the author of ChainFire, download the archive with the CF-Auto-Root file for your phone model and the firmware that is installed on it.

The archive contains the file for rooting and the ODIN flasher for this...
When rooting, the stock kernel is changed and anti-rooting protection is disabled, so there is no need to install a custom kernel...
that is, we flash CF-Auto-Root according to the instructions above (installing the official firmware via Odin) and use Root rights, but, of course, KNOX “ticks”, otherwise it’s not possible...

Flashing custom recovery TWRP recovery and installing modified firmware on Samsung Galaxy Note 5

Installation process custom firmware on Samsung Galaxy Note 5 almost completely corresponds to the official installation service firmware, with the exception of some nuances.

So, first you need to install custom recovery TWRP Recovery to your smartphone. To do this, download the TWRP Recovery SGN5 archive.

Next, we take out a file with the .tar extension from the archive and flash it using ODIN according to the first point of this instruction (flashing the official firmware), the difference is that in the PDA field we insert not the firmware, but our custom recovery.

It is also important when flashing custom recovery without getting Root, when you reboot the smartphone, the stock recovery is restored, so you need to flash a custom recovery by unchecking Auto reboot in Odin program 3, after flashing the custom recovery, turn off your Samsung SM-N920C Galaxy Note 5 manually (directly from the Download mode, disconnecting it from the computer), then go from the off state to Recovery mode(three buttons)). After CF-Auto-Root this is no longer relevant, the procedure for restoring stock recovery is nailed down.

The firmware itself can be downloaded - for example CUSTOM EASY ROM FAR. 1.5v (NOTE 5 N920C), MinotaurusRom Note7 Port, AURORA-V24.1

Then we go into custom recovery. To do this, turn off the device and hold down the buttons at the same time Power, Home And Volume Up.

Delete all data on the device (Optional). In recovery we select Wipe date/factory reset -> Yes – Wipe all user data.
Let's go to Wipe cache partition and choose Yes -> Wipe cache partition.
Let's go to Advanced -> Wipe dalvik cache -> Yes – Wipe dalvik cache.
Let's go to Mount and Storage and format the sections:
/boot
/cache
/system
/data

Let's go to Install Zip -> Choose zip from storage/sdcard1(Or chose zip from external sdcard depending on the recovery), select the previously copied firmware on the memory card and select Yes – install, the installation of the firmware will begin.
After installing the firmware, in recovery select Reboot system now and the device will begin rebooting.
